Daisy Black, the former El Portal mayor, died on Wed., June 29. A candlelight service is scheduled for Saturday, July 2, at 7 p.m. at the El Portal Village Hall.

A candlelight service is planned for Saturday night to honor former El Portal mayor Daisy Black, who died Wednesday.

The 7 p.m. service will be held at the city’s Village Hall on July 2, the El Portal police department said Friday. No details have been announced regarding a funeral.

The El Portal Village Hall address is 500 NE 87th St., El Portal.

Black, 68, was rushed to the hospital Wednesday morning after collapsing during an interview with local unions considering whether to endorse her in a County Commission race. Black was challenging incumbent Audrey Edmonson for the District 3 race. The AFL-CIO voted to endorse Edmonson and two other incumbents later in the day. Black died at Hialeah Hospital.

Christina White, Miami-Dade’s elections supervisor, said the county would shift the District 3 race to the unopposed category, meaning Edmonson would be automatically elected and not appear on the Aug. 30 ballot. On Friday, Black’s status was listed as “withdrawn” on the county’s elections website.
