A confrontation between a security guard and a panhandler led to a shooting Thursday morning at a Miami Metromover station.

The shooting happened just before 6 a.m. at the station, 50 NE 15th St., next to Miami-Dade County School Board headquarters.

The shooting put a panhandler in the Ryder Trauma unit and a security guard in the hospital.

According to Miami-Dade police, the guard asked the panhandler to leave the Metromover. The panhandler did, then returned. In a physical confrontation, the panhandler choked and bit the security guard, who managed to shoot the panhandler.

The injured person was taken to Ryder Trauma Center. Police have not released that person’s name or said what led to the shooting.

The station reopened at 7:40 a.m. and Metromover is expected to continue on a normal schedule.
