Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews had to pry security bars loose after a fire ripped through a home on the 2000 block of Northwest 60th Street.

As a fire ripped through a Northwest Miami-Dade home Sunday firefighters were faced with a challenge: Burglar bars were blocking the windows.

Firefighters first had to pry the bars loose before they could break the windows and get into the home on the 2000 block of Northwest 60th Street.

No one was home, but the house was severely damaged, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Erika Benitez said in an e-mail that "4,000 Americans die each year in fires, and approximately 20,000 are injured."

"Security bars may help keep your family safe from intruders, but they can also trap you in a deadly fire," she said.
