Miami-Dade Police identified the drowned swimmer found Wednesday afternoon as 18-year-old Darrius Rhome, a senior at Carol City High and member of its baseball team.
According to police, Rhome and a friend jumped into the Haulover Inlet on Wednesday morning from a seawall without realizing the strength of the current. The friend managed to swim to shore. Rhome didn’t make it and was dragged further into inlet, which is the first access boaters have to the ocean north of Government Cut at PortMiami. His body was found at the bottom of the inlet — about 12 feet below — at 5:40 p.m.
Miami-Dade spokesman Daniel Ferrin said the inlet is not a place to jump in the water.
“It’s not a place to go swimming,” he said. “The current is way too strong.”
