One man was hospitalized Friday morning after his car smashed into a tree, landing on top of the root ball.

Just before 7 a.m. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived on the scene at Northwest 52nd Street and Northwest 87th Avenue and found the passenger trapped under his steering wheel, said Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Erika Benitez.

The technical rescue team — emergency medical response firefighters who specialize in this kind of rescue — braced the car to hold it steady while they crawled in and pulled the driver out through the window.

The driver was sent to Kendall Medical Center with injuries to his face and arm.
