Hours after Miami-Dade firefighters rescued a 6-year-old girl alone in a burning apartment, police arrested her mother who allegedly did not attempt to save her daughter.
Erica Rosello, 32, was charged with child neglect with great bodily harm early Friday.
The fire erupted at the Versailles Gardens Condominiums at Flagler Street and 94th Avenue, just before 8 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters found a little girl trapped inside unit 104. She was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
A witness told police he saw Rosello in the hallway of the complex while smoke was coming from her apartment. She denied there was a fire but admitted her only daughter was inside, according to the police report. The witness attempted to rescue the girl but could not get inside the apartment.

Investigators said that as firefighters tended to the child, Rosello fled the scene. She later called her mother to check on her daughter. The woman convinced Rosello to come to the hospital and cooperate with investigators.
“The firefighter basically entered a smoke-filled room and found the little girl lying on the bed,’’ said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Erika Benitez. “This is the type of rescue that every firefighter hopes for, in the sense that it had the best possible outcome. She was brought out to safety and the fire was contained.”
