An elderly man shot a woman and then killed himself inside Kindred Hospital in Coral Gables Monday morning.
The man, who was in his late 80s, called a woman on his phone early Monday, said Detective Dan Ferrin of the Miami-Dade Police Department. He told her to come to the hospital, located at 5190 SW Eighth St., which focuses on long-term inpatient care and rehabilitation for chronically ill patients.
Witnesses said the pair had a calm conversation, and as the woman walked away, the man drew a gun and shot her “several times” before turning the gun on himself.
Detective Ferrin said the woman was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital and is expected to survive. He said the man is dead.

Police did not release either of their names, the woman’s age or how they knew each other.
Charles Doten, the CEO for Kindred Hospital, called the shooting a “very sad and unfortunate situation.”
“A family dispute occurred in our lobby away from patient rooms,” Doten said in a prepared statement. “Patient care was not impacted at any time. Upon learning of the altercation, we immediately contacted the police. We are fully cooperating with the authorities in the ongoing investigation.”
