The Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest on Friday, Dec. 12 at Woodys West End Tavern turned out to be a major success as it brought in a pretty handsome amount of $550 for Relay For Life.
Woodys is the sponsor of the Relay For Life team, Pretty In Pink, and the event was conceived and organized by team members Caitlin Smith and Elaine Martin.
“It’s National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day today; however, we didn’t know that when we came up with the idea,” said Smith. “We’re signing up people as they come in.”
There was a $10 entrance fee and team members were selling paper ornaments and taking photos to raise extra money. First-place prize was a $50 spa gift card, second place was a $30 gift card for Johnny Carino’s Restaurant; and third place was a $20 gift card for Woodys.

“If this works out, we’re going to make it an annual Relay event during the Christmas season,” said Smith.
Second-place winner Samantha Dempsey said, “This has been very exciting. I had a friend send me the sweater and vest from up north because you can’t get this stuff in Miami.”
Winning first place was a couple: Joanna Gonzalez and Fernando Cabeza with their tacky, sparkly and lighted sweaters adorned with large gingerbread men.
“It took me 10 minutes each to make them,” said Gonzalez. “I got everything at a thrift store. I spent about $25.”
Gonzalez said she was going to use the $50 spa gift certificate and added, “We had a good time but you won’t see these sweaters again.”
