Grants boost funding for Miami-Dade cops

Miami-Dade police are getting a boost in staffing and equipment — thanks to two federal grants totaling more than $4 million.

County officials announced the grants on Tuesday. The larger grant, a three-year $3,125,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, will be used to hire 25 additional officers to enhance community policing. Under the terms of the grant, the county must keep the additional officers for at least one year after the federal funding ends.

A second grant for the county, also from the U.S. Department of Justice, provides $1,000,000 to purchase 500 body-worn cameras for police. The county has already approved $2 million to purchase 1,000 body cameras. Patrol officers will be the first to receive the new cameras.
