Police announce arrest of foot-sniffer at FIU library

Florida International University police on Tuesday announced the arrest of a man who detectives say smelled the feet of a woman as she sat in the library last month.

Eddy Juan, 53, was charged with violation of sexual offender registration, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, aggravated assault and resisting without violence, according to Miami-Dade police.

According to FIU, a man crawled under a table at the Green Library on the main West Miami-Dade campus and sniffed the feet of a female student.

“Although some may consider this to be humorous or insignificant, the FIUPD takes these reports seriously and continues to investigate the matter,” the FIU Police Department said in a statement.

Someone reported a foot-sniffing incident at 12:15 p.m. Aug 29, according to the university.

“It is not clear to police what the intention of the man was and no one was hurt as a result of the incident,” FIU said in a statement. “FIUPD takes reports like this seriously and continues to investigate the matter.”

After the media reports went out, FIU Police Chief Alex Casas said tips came in leading them to the foot-sniffer. He was located at Southwest 51st Street and 104th Avenue and crashed at 59th Street and 79th Court, Miami-Dade police said.

“Police officers saturated the area and located the individual riding a scooter,” he said. “The individual attempted to flee and was apprehended and arrested.”

Over the summer, FIU police warned students about a serial butt-grabber who was seen on a bicycle grabbing the rear ends of female students.
