A patrol officer with the FIU police department has been put on leave after authorities say he fired his gun into the air at the Miami Dade police training field.
FIU Police Chief Alex Casas identified the officer as Jose Mesa, who has he said has been with the department on and off for eight years.
“Anytime you fire into the air, it’s dangerous,” Casas said Saturday morning outside the FIU police department headquarters at the university’s Modesto Maidique Campus. “He did it without authorization.”
The incident occurred Tuesday at the Miami-Dade Public Safety Training Institute on 9601 NW 58th Street in Doral. No injuries were reported as a result.

The FIU police department will be conducting an investigation into the incident, and will bring their findings before the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
“We don’t tolerate this type of behavior,” Casas said. “Anytime an officer fails to comply with his duty or does something outside of the norm, it’s a risk for us.”
