A tanker truck overturned on Florida’s Turnpike near the Bird Road exit Thursday morning, killing the driver and shutting down lanes to traffic in both directions for several hours, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The driver was heading north at 10:36 a.m. when he lost control, causing the truck to overturn and collide into the center median concrete barrier, Lt. Alejandro Camacho, an FHP spokesman, said.

Troopers closed lanes in both directions, with traffic reopening by 4 p.m., according to the Florida Department of Transportation’s online camera system.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
