Two women are dead after the Tesla sedan that they were in crashed into a flatbed commercial truck on U.S. 1 in Homestead, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened in the northbound lanes of U.S. 1 around 2:30 a.m. near Southwest 127th Avenue. The gray Tesla collided with the rear of the truck, according to the FHP.

The Tesla driver and her passenger died at the scene, FHP Lt. Alejandro Camacho said.

U.S. 1 was closed between Southwest 232nd and 240th streets for a few hours for the preliminary investigation, but has since reopened.

According to WPLG-Local 10, the deceased were two women in their late 20s or early 30s. The truck that they crashed into was part of a caravan of other construction trucks driving slowly on U.S. 1, the station reported.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
