Need help making a rental budget or finding housing? North Miami has a workshop
Struggling to afford rent? Worried about renting a new place or dealing with a new landlord?
If so, the North Miami Housing and Social Services Department is hosting a Rent Readiness Workshop on Tuesday, April 7, at the North Miami Public Library.
The workshop will go over the essentials of budgeting, looking and applying for a rental unit, avoiding rental scams, and dealing with landlords and property managers.
Nearly 1.3 million Miami-Dade residents — 45% of the county’s population — rent their homes, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, and they pay an average of $1,859 each month in rent.
Many of them are struggling to make ends meet. More than half of Miami-Dade households are living paycheck to paycheck. For most, housing is their biggest expense.
Nearly two-thirds of Miami-Dade renters are cost-burdened, meaning more than 30% of their monthly income goes toward housing costs, while 36% spend at least half of their paycheck on rent, Census data shows.
Such financial precarity puts many renters at risk of eviction, which can make it difficult to rent in the future. Last year, 16,814 evictions were filed in Miami-Dade County, according to the University of Florida’s Shimberg Center for Housing Studies.
The workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 7, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the North Miami Public Library located at 835 NE 132nd St., North Miami, 33161.
