Driver for Amazon in Miami-Dade stole packages from customers, sheriff’s office says
An Amazon delivery driver was arrested on Monday in the theft of nearly $1,800 in items from customers, ranging from a PlayStation console to a Snickers bar, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said.
Officers responded around noon to an Amazon warehouse at 13320 SW 132nd Ave. to investigate a theft, according to an arrest affidavit. An Amazon loss-prevention employee told officers that since Andy Manuel Garcia Machado, 29, started working as a delivery driver in November, multiple high value items had been reported missing.
The loss-prevention employee confronted Machado, who “confessed to her that he had reported them as missing and taken the items for himself instead of delivering them to customers,” the affidavit said.
These items, which included a solar panel, bluetooth speakers, a watch and an air purifier, were valued at $1,757.88. Machado allegedly admitted to officers he stole the items to sell for money.
Machado is facing one count of third-degree grand theft. He was in custody Tuesday night on a $2,500 bond and an immigration hold at the Miami-Dade Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, jail records show. He did not have an attorney listed as representing him yet.
The driver wasn’t an Amazon employee, a company spokesperson said. He works for a delivery service partner, which are small businesses that deliver to Amazon customers.
“Theft is unacceptable, and we have a zero-tolerance policy,” an Amazon spokesperson said. “This individual no longer delivers packages for Amazon, and we’re supporting law enforcement with their investigation.”
