A woman with a knife was shot dead at a Northwest Miami-Dade home Saturday after a confrontation with Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies, MDSO said.

Karen Gomez was 52. The shooting will be investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, as is standard procedure in police shootings.

According to MDSO, deputies went to a house near Northwest 189th Street and 55th Avenue, in the MonteRey Country Club Lakes development, around 4 p.m. to answer a call about a woman they were told was self-harming with a knife. Deputies, MDSO said, tried to talk to Gomez.

At some point, Gomez “was tased with a less lethal device, and at the same time, a deputy discharged his service weapon, striking the female,” MDSO Assistant Sheriff Eric Garcia told media on the scene Saturday night, as shown on video by WSVN-Channel 7.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took Gomez to a hospital, where she died.
