Florida Turnpike reopens after heavy traffic following a deputy struck by car
Parts of the Florida Turnpike have reopened after a closure connected to a crash in which a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy was hit by a car and hospitalized caused major traffic delays.
All northbound lanes on the Turnpike were closed beginning around 8 a.m. from Northwest 41st Street to 74th Street, according to Florida 511. By 3:30 p.m., the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office announced the lanes had been reopened, ending a more than seven-hour closure.

Around 7 a.m., the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy, who has not been named, was on duty when he responded to a crash to assist Florida Highway Patrol somewhere northbound on the Turnpike between Northwest 41st and 58th streets.
The deputy was stopped on the Turnpike near Northwest 74th Street when the car hit him, the sheriff’s office said. He was airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he underwent surgery for multiple injuries all over his body. He is now in stable condition.
“Although we remain cautiously hopeful, this is very serious and we ask everyone for prayers,” Assistant Sheriff Eric Garcia said.
