Miami once again outdid itself after a record $43.8 million came pouring in for Give Miami Day.

The 24-hour fundraising event led by The Miami Foundation began at 12:01 a.m. Thursday. It’s the largest single-area giving event in the United States and brought in millions for Miami-Dade nonprofits.

“This outpouring of unity and support came despite economic volatility at a moment when donations across the country are in sharp decline,” said Miami Foundation CEO Rebecca Fishman Lipsey. “We saw generosity pour out from every corner of Miami, fueling support for every issue area. I’ve never been prouder to call this place home.”

More than 1,400 organizations took part in this year’s campaign, which had a celebration at loanDepot Park on Thursday —transforming the Marlins baseball field into a fundraising headquarters complete with music, dancing, games and food.

A record number of Give Miami Day donors generated $43.8 million, surpassing last year’s total of $39.5 million. The amount raised has steadily grown since Give Miami Day began 14 years ago.

In Give Miami Day’s first year “by the grace of God,” the event raised a million dollars, said Fishman Lipsey, who on Thursday wore a sparkling purple jacket — the event’s signature color.

Fishman Lipsey told the Miami Herald that while the millions raised are an extraordinary feat, the number that matters most to her is the total number of donations, which reached another record-breaking 120,301, surpassing last year’s 109,784. The total number of donors came out to 60,369.
