Thousands of friends, family, colleagues and members of the South Florida law-enforcement community packed into loanDepot park Tuesday to honor the life and service of slain Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Deputy Devin Jaramillo.
The service included several moving eulogies from Jaramillo’s family and colleagues, who noted his hard work, mentorship of others and loving ways.
“The badge that you wear is not just a job, it’s a way of life,” said his father, David Jaramillo, a retired Miami-Dade Police detective who also served as president of the Hispanic Police Officers Association. “You will always be my protector. I will carry you in my heart for the rest of my days.”
Jaramillo, 27, was killed Nov. 7 by 21-year-old Steven Rustrian after what began as a routine traffic stop involving a minor car crash in southwest Miami-Dade. The two men got into an altercation, and Rustrian grabbed Jaramillo’s service handgun and shot the young deputy several times. Rustrian then fatally shot himself.
