Publix or CVS open on Veterans Day? See what’s running and not in South Florida
Veterans Day used to be Armistice Day, which celebrated the Nov. 11., 1918, end of World War I, a war called by some at the time “the war to end all wars.” Now, it’s a holiday of public services to honor all veterans who have served in the U.S. armed forces.
But it’s not a holiday that halts business, as you see on the below list of what’s open and what’s closed in Miami-Dade and Broward counties for Tuesday. But some government services will be off for the day.
Here’s what to know:
Supermarkets, big box stores and malls
Costco closes for more holidays than any other large retailer. If Costco is open on Veterans Day, everybody is open. And Costco is open. So, shop away. Malls, Target, Walmart, Publix, CVS, Sedano’s and everywhere else are open regular hours.
Mass transit
Miami-Dade: Regular weekday service for Metrobus, Metrorail, Metromover, and MetroConnect.
Broward: Regular weekday service.
Garbage collection
Miami, Miami-Dade County, Broward County, Fort Lauderdale: Regular service. Residents elsewhere should check with their municipality.
U.S. Postal Service
Branches will be closed. There will be no mail delivery, except Priority Express Mail.
Stock markets
Both the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ will be open.
Courts and county government offices
Miami-Dade and Broward: Closed.
Public schools
Miami-Dade and Broward: Closed.
Public libraries
Miami-Dade: Closed
Broward: Closed except for Nova Southeastern University’s Alvin Sherman Library.
