Another major Florida GOP politician has thrown their name behind a former city manager running for Miami mayor.

In a post on X Thursday morning, U.S. Sen. Rick Scott announced his endorsement of Emilio González, a retired U.S. Army colonel, for mayor ahead of the city’s Nov. 4 election.

“I’m proud to endorse my friend @EmilioforMiami for Mayor,” Scott wrote. “With 26 years in the Army and service at every level, Emilio will make Miami a city where families thrive, businesses grow, and government works for everyone. ”

The endorsement from Scott, a former Florida governor, follows an announcement last month from Gov. Ron DeSantis that he also backs González’s candidacy.

In a press release, González described Scott as “a leader who understands what it means to put service before politics.”

González, who was the city’s top administrator from 2018 to 2020, has pitched himself as a candidate who can improve the city’s relationship with Tallahassee and Washington D.C. Before becoming city manager, González was the director of Miami International Airport. He also served as the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under President George W. Bush.

González is one of 13 candidates who qualified to run for Miami mayor. The other contenders include County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, who recently received the endorsement of Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, and former Mayor Xavier Suarez, who is running to succeed his son, Francis Suarez.
