Miami Northwestern student beaten with Stanley cup, trumpet in restroom: officials
A brawl in a Miami-Dade high school restroom Monday morning ended with one teen girl hospitalized after being hit with a Stanley cup water bottle and a trumpet — and another jailed for attacking her, according to school police.
At around 11 a.m., school officers responded to reports of a fight at Miami Northwestern High School, located at 1100 NW 71st St. An officer arrived to see a school security guard helping a student, who was leaking blood from her forehead, to the main office.
A 15-year-old, whom the Miami Herald is not naming due to her age, told police that the wounded girl started the altercation by hitting her friend in the restroom first, per the teen’s arrest paperwork. She added her friend defended herself by striking the girl back with a Stanley cup, police say.
As it escalated, the 15-year-old then threw herself into the fight and hit the girl with a trumpet twice before grabbing her hair and throwing punches, the arrest report read.
The wounded girl was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for lacerations to her forehead. Her mother, Nicole Luster, told Local 10 the main concern was that her daughter suffers from epilepsy — and that she was not contacted by the school after the alleged assault.
Her daughter, Ariadna Sharpton, told the TV station she was standing up to a girl who was teasing her.
“And then she hit me with a Stanley cup in my head and then I got hit with a trumpet,” Sharpton said. “Anything could have happened to me at that time, at that moment.”
As a result, she does not plan to return to Miami Northwestern, Sharpton told the TV station.
In a statement to the Herald, the school district said,”[s]chool administration and Miami-Dade Schools Police swiftly addressed the situation, resulting in an arrest. Additionally, the students involved are being disciplined according to the Code of Student Conduct.”
The arrested teen, who was wielding the trumpet, was charged with battery and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center, per her arrest paperwork. It’s unclear if she remains there.
