Hospitalized Pinecrest Glades students were ‘intoxicated,’ sheriff’s office says
The five Pinecrest Glades Academy students taken to a hospital Friday morning ingested something that caused intoxication, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics responded to the kindergarten-through-12th-grade charter school, located at 15250 SW Eighth Street, shortly after 10 a.m.
The children were taken to a hospital, and their conditions were not immediately available. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue would not comment on their treatment, citing medical-privacy laws.
The sheriff’s office said Friday afternoon that it was investigating the incident, but interviews would be delayed “due to the students being intoxicated and receiving medical attention.”
Detective Samantha Choon, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman, said investigators still do not know what the students ingested.
Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami reported that the school sent an email to parents saying a student brought a “food item” that was shared with other pupils, causing an adverse reaction.
“We ask that you take a moment to remind your children of the seriousness of their actions,” the email read. “What may seem like a simple choice can carry very severe consequences, including potential criminal charges and school-related disciplinary measures.”
Initial reports indicate the students are teenagers, but that could not immediately be verified. School officials have not responded to the Miami Herald’s request for comments.
