Veteran Miami-Dade deputy shoots, kills armed man during shootout in Goulds: MDSO
A veteran sergeant with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office shot and killed a man who was waiving a handgun and threatening to shoot people outside a small Goulds convenience store Tuesday night, law enforcement officials said.
Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz told reporters that citizens called 911 about the man around 7:30 pm, and the sergeant, who has not been named, was first to arrive to the area of SW 215 Street and 120th Avenue.
While both were inside there vehicles, the sergeant ordered the man to show his hands, “and he did not comply,” Cordero-Stutz said. The sheriff’s office identified the man Thursday as 44-year-old Jose Pineda, Jr.
Pineda opened fire at the deputy, who returned fire, striking him. The sheriff’s office said Pineda has a lengthy criminal record.
Both the sergeant’s patrol car and the Pineda’s minivan were riddled with bullets, according to the sheriff’s office.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics took Pineda to the hospital, where he died, Cordero-Stutz said.
It is not immediately clear if both the deputy and Pineda stayed in their vehicles during the gun battle, but the Pineda eventually exited his minivan either before or after he was hit.
Neither the deputy nor any member of the public were wounded.
“Our sergeant, we are very grateful to say, does not have any physical injuries,” Cordero-Stutz said. “Obviously, this was a very traumatic experience, and we will make sure to support and take care of him during this difficult time.”
