ICE agent struck by car during traffic stop in Homestead, Homeland Security says
A federal immigration agent was struck by a car during a traffic stop in Homestead over the weekend, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Sometime Sunday, ICE said an agent was conducting a traffic stop and standing outside of his vehicle when the man driving the other car put it in reverse, hitting the agent in the leg, “nearly crushing him.”
The driver of the car, who ICE says is illegally in the country from Guatemala, sped off and hit several other vehicles before he crashed into a utility can, the agency said.
The driver, Henry Isaul Garcia, and three other men who were also not legally permitted to be in the U.S., tried running away but were detained by responding ICE agents, according to the press release.
After paramedics took the group to a hospital for treatment, ICE said they were discharged and are now being processed for deportation. It’s not clear whether they’re being held at Alligator Alcatraz in the Everglades.
The agent, whom ICE did not name, was treated at the scene for his leg injury, an ICE spokesman told the Herald. The Miami Herald has reached out to Homestead Police asking if anyone in the utility van was injured.
