Woman injured in shooting sparks shootout between Miami-Dade deputies and gunman
Multiple shootings at an apartment in northwest Miami-Dade ended with one woman injured and the gunman dead Tuesday afternoon, officials said. After responding deputies found the woman wounded, they exchanged gunfire with the shooter, but its unclear if their bullets killed him.
Around 4:30 p.m., the shooting unfolded at an apartment building, located at the 300 block of Northwest 72nd Avenue, according to the sheriff’s office. Traffic was backed up on Northwest 7th Street and 72nd Avenue due to the shooting.
Deputies found one woman who was shot, Assistant Sheriff Eric Garcia said. Deputies were able to get her out, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took her to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
Witnesses guided deputies to the fourth floor, where they found the shooter. The man, 50-year-old Javier Albriza Jara, and three deputies then exchanged gunfire in an apartment.
The deputies retreated and waited for the arrival of the Street Response Team and the sheriff’s office SWAT team. The response team swept the building, where they discovered Jara dead.
It’s unclear if Jara shot himself or died from injuries inflicted by the deputies. The relationship between the woman, 46-year-old Yudaisy Salgueiro, and Jara, is under investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, as is protocol with deputy-involved shootings.
This story has been updated with the names of the victim and the man accused of shooting her.
Gardenia Rodriguez lives a block away, but her daughter lives in an apartment building next door to the shooting scene and was trapped in her home for hours.
“I was in Hialeah, and she called me to tell me there was shooting and there were police running in her hallways and in the building next door,” Rodriguez said, adding she became immediately frightened for her daughter.
“I told her not to come outside. Get in a closet or bathroom,” she said. “It was so scary.”
