A Miami-Dade man is behind bars for a fatal crash that detectives have deemed a homicide. The 57-year-old ran over a landscaper in high-visibility clothing last month, police say.

Daniel Alvarez was arrested on Wednesday and is facing a charge of vehicular homicide in the death of Carlos Delahoz-Vega, a 38-year-old father of two.

During the morning of July 17, Delahoz-Vega was wearing a bright green company shirt as he tended to his landscaping duties near Southwest 187th Street and South Dixie Highway, an arrest report reads.

He was walking in the outside lane of the road cleaning the sidewalk with a backpack leafblower. Meanwhile, Alvarez, driving a 2020 BMW X3, was barreling toward him faster than the 45 mph speed limit, police said.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detectives said Alvarez drove off the roadway onto the sidewalk, directly in the path of Delahoz-Vega and slammed into him.

The impact vaulted “him onto the hood and windshield before violently striking the pavement,” the report reads.

Delahoz-Vega was pronounced dead at the scene.

Later that day, deputies found Alvarez sleeping in the parking lot of a Rooms To Go along South Dixie Highway, saying his speech was slow and he seemed sluggish.

A drug evaluation revealed he was impaired from stimulants. Deputies said they found three yellow packets in his pocket labeled buprenorphine and naloxone sublingual film — both are substances used to treat opioid use.

As of Friday, he remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Alvarez has faced dozens of criminal charges since the late 1980s in Miami-Dade County. The charges included kidnapping, drug possession, grand theft burglary and petit theft.

Given the records’ ages, it is unclear how many of those charges Alvarez has been convicted of. Several cases saw charges dropped or transferred to other courts.
