A woman sitting on a bus bench was beaten within an inch of her life with a hammer, Miami-Dade deputies announced Thursday. The alleged attacker turned himself in after the assault.

Late Friday night, Chinwe Onyikue, 46, was sitting on the bench near Northwest 27th Avenue and Northwest 96th Street near Opa-Locka when Bryant Renardo Rose, 29, walked up to her, according to an arrest report.

He abruptly began beating her with a hammer and then ran off.

She was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital for head injuries and was in critical condition, “clinging for her life,” deputies said. She immediately went into surgery.

Rose turned himself in on Saturday while detectives were investigating. Deputies said he detailed what happened and confessed to the attack.

Rose said he saw Onyikue on the bench, then went and got the hammer. He then proceeded to strike her about 15 times.

As of Thursday, Rose was still remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, facing a charge of attempted felony murder.
