A baby dolphin found itself in trouble when it became injured and stranded on the rocky jetty at Haulover Beach on Saturday, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Around 11:50 a.m., the department’s Ocean Rescue lifeguards responded to calls of a beached dolphin.

A lifeguard found the young marine mammal, which was unable to swim or right itself. The dolphin appeared to have been struck by a vessel, said Erika Benitez, a department spokesperson.

Officials are hopeful an injured baby dolphin will recover after possibly getting hit by a vessel, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

“Our lifeguard got hold of the dolphin [and] removed it from the rocks,” Benitez said.

The injured dolphin was safely retrieved and handed over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, where it is now receiving care. Officials hope the dolphin will recover and eventually be released back into the wild.
