A man was arrested after hitting a police officer while driving an off-road vehicle in Miami-Dade, officials said Sunday.

Adolfo Denis Jr., 24, is facing an attempted second-degree murder charge after the vehicle crashed into Pinecrest officer Andres Garcia and pinned him to his patrol car, according to Cpt. Ivan Osores and Miami Herald news partner CBS News Miami. Jail records show Denis, who’s being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, also faces fleeing and eluding and aggravated battery charges.

Denis remains in jail as of Sunday; his bond hasn’t been set by a judge.

Garcia was hit by the vehicle near Southwest 104th Street and U.S. 1., per CBS News Miami. The vehicle sped off and ran over Garcia’s foot. Officers ultimately stopped it on Krome Avenue near 167th Street.

Officials have not specified what type of off-road vehicle was involved in the crash.

During the ordeal, Garcia shot at the vehicle, but no one was struck by the gunfire, according to Local 10 News. Officers had been called to the area at around 9 p.m. regarding several off-road vehicles trying to take over U.S. 1.

Garcia suffered a minor injury and has since been released from the hospital, Osores said. He’s expected to make a full recovery.

“Thanks to his quick thinking and training, he was able to minimize the impact and avoid what could have been a far more serious injury,” Osores added. “...He remains in good spirits and is receiving support from our department and his family.”

Two other people were detained and interviewed but were released pending further investigation, according to Osores. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
