Kids First Urgent Care, a pediatric after-hours urgent care, has opened in Aventura. It was started by Dr. Alan Swartz, medical director of Kids First.
Swartz has been a South Florida pediatric fixture for more than 30 years. He is on staff at Baptist Hospital Miami, West Kendall Baptist Hospital and South Miami Hospital and has senior privileges at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where he was recently honored.
Director of operations and marketing and Swartz’s son, Mark Swartz, spoke of the uniqueness and necessity of a pediatric after-hours urgent care: “The only real option a parent had, for a simple urgency, was an emergency room.”
“Your child’s medical urgencies don’t conform to normal office hours and neither do we,” Dr. Swartz said in a press release.
They have staff members who speak fluent English and Spanish as well as a staff member who speaks Russian.
Kids First also has an on-site laboratory to help parents get a quick diagnosis of ailments and an on-site pharmacy.
“We are the alternative to a minute clinic,” Mark Swartz said. “We are pediatric professionals and we make it convenient so they don’t have to go anywhere else.”
Kids First treats a wide variety of ailments from flu symptoms to sprains.
Many local pediatricians are sending their patients to Kids First for after-hours needs and there has been positive feedback across the board. New patients are learning about Kids First from social media or word of mouth.
“People complain about wait times and that’s something we don’t have,” Mark Swartz said. The current average wait time is about 10 to 15 minutes.
“We are looking for this to pick up traction to potentially expand in the future,” he said. “The trend is that more people are going to urgent cares because they find it more convenient. We are going to take this model forward.”
Former Aventura City Commissioner Zev Auerbach was instrumental in the inception of Kids First. Auerbach was passionate about the project because he knew about the community’s need for after-hour pediatric care. He was influential in keeping the focus on Aventura.
Auerbach died more than a year ago. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and a room in the urgent care were dedicated in his memory.
