A Sweetwater robbery was abruptly ended Friday morning when officers halted three men while they were still committing the crime. Chaos quickly ensued when police opened fire and injured one of the robbers, authorities said.

Around 10:50 a.m., several 911 calls flooded in reporting an armed robbery at a business in the area of Northwest 108th Avenue and 17th Street, Sweetwater police said. Meanwhile, officers nearby were patrolling and quickly rushed to the business.

They arrived so fast that the three unidentified men were still robbing the business. A confrontation began, and soon after, shots were fired, police said. It was later discovered that the men had at least one gun, but it was unclear if they exchanged gunfire with officers.

The three men hopped into a car and sped away, triggering a police chase that ended in Medley. Officers took all three into custody, and while doing so, found one of the men had a gunshot wound, police said.

He was taken to a hospital along with another of the men, who told officers he was not feeling well, but unrelated to any gunshot wounds. No officers or bystanders were injured.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is standard practice, as the FBI investigates the robbery. Police could not confirm how many officers fired their weapons.
