Looking to celebrate Juneteenth in South Florida? Check out this list of options
As June rears its hot and humid head in South Florida, make sure to pack plenty of sunscreen and water as you head outside Thursday for a day of dancing, eating delicious cuisines and honoring Black history to celebrate Juneteenth, one of the most prominent African American national holidays.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States — marked as June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers announced the freedom of slaves in Galveston, Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
The day was made a federal holiday in 2021 by former President Joe Biden, but Florida legislature considers it a “day of observance” instead of a paid state holiday. In true South Florida fashion, locals still have plans to welcome it with fun, fanfare and festivities.
