Sunday morning, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units continued to fight a 350-acre brush fire that began Saturday near the Miccosukee Casino and Everglades Correctional Institution in West Miami-Dade, MDFR says.

A stretch of Krome Avenue was shut down between Southwest Eighth Street and Kendall Drive. The brush fire’s smoke could be seen from space, satellite imagery from the National Weather Service showed.

MDFR’s call list showed over 40 units dealing with the brush fire. Florida Forest Service said Saturday night containment had reached 30%.

“Due to the smoke conditions, I would suggest that people just don’t come to the area unless you have to,” warned Chief Horacio Rodriguez of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue in a video released Saturday night.

Around 2:40 p.m., fire-rescue crews and the Florida Forest Service rushed to the fire near Krome Avenue and Southwest 12th Street, officials said. The Krome detention center is also nearby.

Among the units deployed were Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s water tender unit, which has transported large amounts of water, and air rescue unit, which has suppressed the flames with overhead water drops.

Fire rescue shared a video of their efforts and the blaze’s growing column of smoke. Authorities are urging those with respiratory problems to keep their windows and doors closed and to recirculate the air conditioning in their vehicles. There are no residential communities directly near the fire.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released a statement on the safety of detainees held at the Krome detention center.

“At this moment there are no evacuations, no injuries and the detainees are safe by being kept indoors as a precaution,” said Nestor Yglesias, a spokesperson for the agency.
