Lucas’ family asked Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, a longtime friend of Lucas’ father, to be their spokesperson as they mourn a heavy loss. In that role, Suarez said Lucas had a spontaneous rupture of the aorta potentially linked to an undiagnosed genetic condition.

His family also wanted to ensure Lucas’ death does not “discourage other children from participating in youth athletics. They emphasize that they were unaware of the underlying condition and continue to seek answers through further medical review,” the statement read.”

“They are people of deep faith, and they’re leaning on that faith—and each other—to get through the unimaginable,” Suarez said.

Earlier this week, Suarez posted condolences to Instagram: “Lucas was the eldest son of my dear friend Mike, whom I’ve known for years through our time training together in Coconut Grove. My heart breaks for him and his family.”
