Miami woman crashes car into scooter driver, takes license plate off before running: cops
A 21-year-old woman took her aunt’s car without permission on Monday night, then crashed into a scooter and fled the scene, according to Miami police.
Police say Armani Rodgers was driving a 2010 Nissan Altima late Monday night when she rear-ended a gas-powered scooter near NE 79th Street and Northeast Fifth Avenue. The impact dragged the scooter several feet before coming to a stop.
Rodgers ran out of the car with a female passenger, briefly returning to remove the car’s license plate before running away again, according to police. The scooter rider, who suffered severe head trauma, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where she remained in critical condition as of Wednesday.
Two days after the crash, the owner of the Nissan Altima — Rodger’s aunt — told police that Rodgers had taken the car without permission and was driving it at the time of the crash. Later that evening, Rodgers turned herself in to Miami police.
She is charged with fleeing the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury and fleeing the scene of the crash with no serious bodily injury. Rodgers is jailed at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Thursday morning and her bond status is ‘to be set,” according to jail records.
