A Miami firefighter was hospitalized Monday night after falling through the floor of a burning building after a blaze was intentionally set, Miami Fire Rescue officials said.

The possible arson is under investigation by Miami Fire Rescue, Miami police and the state fire marshal.

Firefighters arrived at 1348 NW First Ave. around 6:50 p.m. Monday and encountered heavy smoke and flames on all three levels, according to Lt. Pete Sanchez of Miami Fire Rescue. While some crews battled the fire, others were checking the unoccupied building — which was under renovation — for any occupants.

About 20 minutes into the operation, a firefighter fell through the second floor, triggering a “Mayday” call, Sanchez said. His colleagues quickly rescued him and took him to the hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Monday night.

The incident escalated to a second alarm, prompting the dispatch of additional units. Aerial ladders were deployed to direct water onto the roof, and within two hours, the fire was brought under control. Another firefighter was also hospitalized with second-degree burns to the ear and forearm, Sanchez said.

Police are now treating the case as a criminal investigation. The Miami Building Department has been called in to assess the structural integrity of the building.
