FHP: Man dies after car goes into canal after crash with tractor trailer on Turnpike
A man died in the hospital Friday morning after his car sank into a canal following a collision with a tractor-trailer truck on Florida’s Turnpike, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 10:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway near mile marker 8, said FHP Lt. Alejandro Camacho, an agency spokesman.
The gray Hyundai hit the truck then drove off the road onto a grassy area, turned over and landed in the canal, Camacho said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue deployed more than 10 units, including dive teams. Divers pulled the man out of the car and stayed on the scene to check if anyone else was in the car, said a Fire Rescue spokesperson. The driver was the only person found.
Paramedics took the man to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he later died, Camacho said.
The crash caused heavy traffic delays in the northbound lanes of the turnpike through the morning.
