Driver who hit and killed skateboarder in Northwest Miami-Dade turns himself in
A teen skateboarding in Northwest Miami-Dade Monday night was killed when a blue Hyundai Sonata — which was attempting to pass a slower moving car — slammed into him and then took off, according to Miami-Dade police.
Cash Pereira, 16, was on Northwest 12th Avenue at 108th Street at about 9 p.m. when he was hit by the car, which was heading north on Northwest 12th Avenue, police said Tuesday morning.
The teen’s father told Miami Herald news partner CBS4 that the family is “broken.”
“A piece of us is gone,” Cornelius Pereira told the station.
The car, a 2007 Hyundai , was later located at 1268 NW 111th St., said Miami-Dade police spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta.
The 28-year-old driver, Gabriel Fleuricourt, turned himself in to Miami police and gave the location of the car, Zabaleta said.
Fleuricourt, who was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with death, failure to have insurance and failure to have registration, bonded out of jail Tuesday afternoon.
“We continue to stress to the community not to flee from the scene of an anccident,” Zabaleta said. “It only makes matters worse.”
