Miami Fire Rescue crews had to pluck a woman from a canal after she fell from a bridge pillar at Northeast 79th Street and Fourth Avenue Monday night.

Crews responding to reports of an unconscious woman spotted the woman on the pedestal in the murky canal, Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said.

“She was unresponsive,” Carroll said. "But there was no way to get to her."

The dive team was called, but crews saw a canoe at a neighboring home and used it to get to her.

By the time they arrived she was “coming around,” Carroll said, but she slipped and fell in the water.

Carroll said the woman told first responders she was homeless and didn't know how she got in the middle of the canal.

She was taken to North Shore Medical Center for an evaluation, Carroll said.
