A bicyclist died following a severe head injury after being hit by a car early Tuesday morning in Miami, officials say.

At about 5:30 a.m., Miami Fire Rescue responded to the area of Southwest 27th Avenue and 22nd Street and found a man in his 50s in critical condition after he was struck by a car.

Police say the man was riding his bike opposite to traffic when he was hit.

The man, who police have not identified, was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center but ultimately died, according to Pete Sanchez, spokesman for Miami Fire Rescue.

The driver remained on scene, according to Michael Vega, spokesman for Miami Police.

The roads were shut down but have since reopened.
