14-year-old arrested in connection to Miami shooting that left one dead, police say
A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection to a shooting that left one person dead and another critically injured in Little Haiti, according to authorities.
On October 11, at approximately 12:50 a.m., Miami Police received two ShotSpotter alerts indicating several rounds had been fired in the vicinity of 131 NE 77th Street.
When they got there, officers discovered two people with multiple gunshot wounds. One victim was found lying face down on the ground and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital Trauma in critical condition.
While the police have yet to officially identify the victims, family members say that one of the deceased was Robin Edenilson Fernandez, a father of three and a construction worker originally from El Salvador.
“On that fateful night, Robin was outside his home with a friend when a stranger approached them asking for money. Unfortunately, Robin didn’t have any cash on him at the time, and for no reason, the stranger took his life,” wrote Nury Fernandez on a GoFundMe page.
Nury Fernandez also noted that the family is trying to raise funds to bury Robin back in his home country.
Through video surveillance, police identified the teenager — whose name the Miami Herald is not releasing due to his age — as the person accused of firing at the two victims. He was seen walking to the scene from his home and then returning, police said.
Miami Police arrested the teen on Tuesday, and he now faces one count of second-degree murder with a weapon and one count of attempted second-degree murder with a weapon.
