Miami Springs police ID man, 74, found dead and bleeding in an alley

Miami Herald

Police have identified the body of a senior citizen who was found in a Miami Springs’ alley with a “blunt trauma” injury shortly before the historic town celebrated the Fourth of July.

On July 4, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was called to the scene of “a male who was down on the ground and bleeding,” said a Miami-Dade police report released to the Herald on Thursday.

“At approximately 6:42 a.m. [on July 4], Miami Springs Police officers were dispatched to the area of NW 36 Street and Miller Drive in reference to a body in an alleyway,” MDPD Detective Argemis Colome said in a statement.

The fatal victim has been identified as Fermin Alvarez, 74, police said. An official cause of death has not been released. Police have released few details about the case.

Alvarez owned a home in the 600 block of Miller Drive, according to the Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser’s Office. His body was found about a block from his home, according to police.

A K-9 detective conducted a firearm’s detection “sniff” of the area, but the report does not mention the results. MDPD’s Homicide Bureau is handling the investigation.

Crime along Miami Springs’ Northwest 36th Street corridor has increased, according to Miami Springs leaders, who in 2021 voted unanimously to reign in ‘immoral behavior’ along a five block stretch of Northwest 36th Street with eight-foot border fences.

In 2013, Miami Springs annexed land near Miami International Airport and created an “adult entertainment district.” In an effort to reduce property tax rates, the city permitted over 20 new hotels that has resulted in a crime surge that includes shootings, rapes, and drug dealing.

Last June, the Herald reported that two people suspected of being members of the Sinaloa Cartel were charged in connection to a 2022 execution-style murder of a man at a nearby Miami Springs’ hourly hotel.
