Parades, poetry and breakfast featuring this actor are among events honoring Dr. King
The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. would have turned 95 on Jan. 15.
On Monday, the national holiday to honor the slain civil rights leader, events will be held throughout South Florida to commemorate his legacy.
Here is a sampling of Monday’s events:
Miami-Dade
5000 Role Models’ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Breakfast: The 31st anniversary of the breakfast will be at 8:30 a.m. at the Miami Beach Convention Center Grand Ballroom, 1901 Convention Center Dr. Headliners include actor Omari Hardwick; Howard Finkelstein, the former public defender of Broward County, for his 31 years of mentoring; and rapper Rick Ross.
A celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.: An evening of essays, poetry and music; 8 p.m. Unitarian Universalist Miami, 7701 SW 76th Ave., Miami. $25-$35. https://shorturl.at/ikGW8
Liberty City MLK Parade: The 47th Annual MLK Parade begins at 11 a.m. at Northwest 54th Street and Seventh Avenue and ends at 32nd Avenue. The parade, which runs for 2.5 hours, follows eight miles of sacred ground from King’s travels to Miami. https://shorturl.at/iloW9.
39th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day 5K Run & Fitness Walk: 8 a.m. at the MLK Plaza Metrorail Station, 6205 NW 27th Ave., Miami. Runners should arrive for registration between 6:30 and 7:45 a.m. https://shorturl.at/grvFW.
MLK Family Festival: Noon at MLK Memorial Park, at 6000 NW 32nd Ct., Miami, with live music, dance and theatrical performances, a crafts marketplace, food vendors and children’s activities. https://shorturl.at/cfC28

King Holiday Celebration Parade in Fort Lauderdale: Starts at 9:30 a.m. at Sistrunk Boulevard and Northwest Fifth Avenue. Ends at Carter Park, 1450 W. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. After the parade, there’s a festival at the park until 3 p.m. https://kingholidaycelebration.com/
