A 1-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition around noon Friday after he was found unresponsive in a pool in Miami, authorities say.

At 11:58 a.m., Miami police and fire rescue paramedics went to the 6200 block of North Miami Avenue after receiving a report of a possible drowning, Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll told the Miami Herald. When paramedics arrived, they took over for two officers who were performing CPR on the baby, he said.

Paramedics then took the child in “extreme critical condition” to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

“The child was found in a small pool in the backyard by a family member,” Carroll said. The family member then got the baby out of the water and called 911, Carroll said.

It is not known how long the child was in the pool.

Miami police are investigating.
