Hialeah gas leak leads to evacuations and street closures. What to know
A gas leak caused by a road repair gone wrong in Hialeah led to evacuations of buildings (including a gas station), street closures and rerouting of Tri-Rail on Friday morning, authorities said.
Around 9 a.m., city of Hialeah workers hit an 8-inch main gas pipe while repairing the road on East 12th Avenue and 21st Street, said Paul Garcia, a spokesman for the Hialeah Fire Department.
Firefighters were called, and they immediately evacuated employees from nearby businesses, he said.
“At this time, the single-family homes are not affected,” Garcia said. The closest residential area is on East 10 Avenue, about a half-mile away.
Hialeah firefighters closed East 12th Avenue and the streets from 18th to 25th as a precaution.
Miami-Dade Police told the Miami Herald the department was assisting with street closures around noon.
Garcia said the city’s gas department and fire officials are working to contain and repair the gas leak.
Around 10:45 a.m., Tri-Rail announced that passengers should expect delays “for the next several hours.”
“A bus bridge will connect trains between Miami Airport, Hialeah Market and Metrorail Transfer stations due to a gas leak in the area today,” the train company said on X, formerly Twitter.
Authorities are asking people to stay away from the area.
