Thunderstorms may delay flights at Miami International Airport, officials say
Travelers at Miami International Airport may see flight delays Thursday night as thunderstorms are forecast. Combined with construction at the airport, officials are advising passengers to check with their airlines about updates.
The airport is operating business as usual — at the moment. About 87% of flights are on-time, which is above the airport’s monthly average, MIA communications director Greg Chin told the Miami Herald.
However, “some flights are expected to be delayed this evening due to thunderstorms in the area and repaving work at one of MIA’s four runways,” he noted. “Travelers should check with their airline for the latest update on their flight.”
There is a small chance, about 10-15%, that thunderstorms may pop up over Everglades National Park, National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Fisher said. The inclement weather may affect airplanes approaching the Miami International.
The ongoing construction also triggered a precautionary statement from the Federal Aviation Administration. Its advisory warned there could be potential flight delays anywhere from an average 78 to 175 minutes.
Chin said the airport has not seen any delays last that long Thursday and there no nationwide flight suspensions, which was erroneously reported on social media earlier in the day.
