Soaring temperatures that have become the theme of this summer show no signs of abating as the National Weather Service has declared an excessive heat warning for much of South Florida Friday.

The warning specifically targets Miami-Dade and Collier counties, with the rest of the region under a heat advisory, the weather service announced Friday morning.

“It already feels like the mid to upper 90s,” said meteorologist Lissette Gonzalez, with Miami Herald news partner CBS Miami.

Temperatures in the upper 90s are expected for most of South Florida Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the weather service said.

The heat index is also expected to climb above 110 degrees Friday and Saturday, the NWS said in a statement.

Don’t expect too much rain to cool things down either, Gonzalez said. That’s because of the Saharan dust that has blown across the Atlantic from Africa that has blanketed the area under a cloud of haze.
