Stormy weather caused more than 175 flight delays and dozens of cancellations on Sunday at South Florida’s two major airports.

The lightning storms happened between 3:30 and 7:30 p.m., Greg Chin, spokesman with the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, said in an email Sunday night.

As of Sunday night, Miami International Airport reported 176 flight delays and 33 cancellations, Chin said.

A photo taken by a Miami Herald reporter shows long lines at the American Airlines terminal. The airline did not immediately respond to questions about the delays and cancellations.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport also experienced delays Sunday, but specific numbers were not immediately available.

Arlene Satchell, spokeswoman for the Broward County Aviation Department, referred questions about issues at the airport to the website FlightAware.com. According to the site, as of 9 p.m. Sunday, there were arrival delays into the airport of about an hour, and departure delays averaging one hour and 20 minutes.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
