Miami-Dade lifts no-swim alert after 2,800 gallons of wastewater entered Biscayne Bay

Miami-Dade lifted on Friday a no-swim advisory for the waters surrounding Jungle Island after 2,800 gallons of wastewater spilled into Biscayne Bay last week.

“Water quality samples are compliant, and signs will be removed,” the county said in a news release.

The rupture of a 12-inch wastewater pipe caused 5,000 gallons of dirty water to spill, but workers recaptured about 2,200 gallons before it reached the bay, the county said last week. The pipe was repaired but the county issued a no-swim alert March 1.

The no-swim advisory also included the waterways surrounding Joia Beach, Venetian Causeway Park, Watson Island Marina and Yacht Haven Grand Miami Marina, the county warned. The alert advised the public to avoid other recreational water activities like fishing and boating.
